How effective is targeted therapy for bowel cancer?

Bowel cancer cells can carry different molecular features. Tests on tumour tissue, and sometimes blood, help identify whether a medicine aimed at a growth signal or another feature is relevant. Depending on the situation, the aim may be to shrink cancer, slow its growth, relieve symptoms, or make another treatment possible. Doctors assess scans, symptoms, examination findings, and blood tests together.

The treatment plan also depends on whether the cancer is localised or has spread, the part of the bowel involved, earlier surgery or medicines, and general health. A target result helps select treatment; it cannot predict exactly how an individual tumour will respond.

Ask whether your tumour has been tested for the features used to select targeted treatment and what the result means. Discuss whether the medicine is being used alone or alongside chemotherapy or another treatment. Keep a record of bowel symptoms, skin changes, blood pressure readings if requested, and other new effects. Take treatment as prescribed and attend planned scans and blood tests.
