The procedure collects sperm from the epididymis or testicle using a needle or a small surgical sample. It may help with blockage, absent sperm in semen, or some problems with sperm production. A fertility team considers semen tests, hormone results, examination, genetic findings, and whether fresh or frozen sperm will be used. Retrieved sperm may be used with intracytoplasmic sperm injection, but retrieval does not by itself create a pregnancy.
