How effective is subcision for atrophic scars?

Atrophic scars are depressions where collagen and supporting tissue have been lost. When fibrous bands anchor the base to deeper tissue, subcision can release that pull and allow the surface to rise during healing. It is more useful for rolling or tethered depressions than for raised scars, very narrow pits, or scars without a tether. The change may be partial, and surface colour or texture may need separate care.

Have the scar pattern assessed in person before deciding. Tell the clinician about active skin disease, previous procedures, bleeding problems, medicines, and any history of thick or raised scars. Follow cleansing and wound-care instructions after treatment and avoid picking at bruised or swollen areas. Sun protection helps reduce lingering colour change. The clinician may space treatments apart or pair subcision with another approach when different scar features need different solutions.

Ask for prompt advice if redness spreads, pain worsens, the area becomes hot, drainage develops, or fever occurs. Emergency care is needed for severe swelling with breathing difficulty. Arrange follow-up when healing is not progressing as expected or when a new firm, raised scar develops.
