How effective is STI screening for pelvic inflammatory disease?

PID is an inflammation or infection affecting the upper reproductive organs. A clinician considers symptoms, a pelvic examination, pregnancy status, and testing together. A positive STI result may identify a trigger that needs treatment and partner management. A negative screen does not exclude PID because other organisms can be involved, an infection may no longer be detectable, or the illness may have another cause.

If you have pelvic pain, unusual discharge, pain during sex, bleeding between periods, or fever, arrange a clinical assessment rather than waiting for a screening result. Testing may use urine or swab samples. Avoid sex until a clinician explains the result and treatment plan; partners may also need assessment. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and return if symptoms do not improve.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting, or a high fever. Pregnancy with pelvic pain or bleeding needs prompt assessment because infection and other urgent conditions require different care.

Ask which infections were tested, whether your symptoms fit PID despite a negative result, whether a partner needs testing, and when to return for review.
