How effective is STI screening for chlamydia?

Chlamydia can affect the cervix, urethra, rectum or throat and may cause no noticeable symptoms. Screening commonly uses a urine sample or a swab, depending on your anatomy, sexual contact and symptoms. A result is most useful when the sample comes from every site that may have been exposed. A negative result does not cover an exposure that happened very recently, so a clinician may advise repeat testing. A positive result means treatment and partner notification are needed.

Tell the clinician about the type of sex you have had, the sites exposed, symptoms, pregnancy possibility and any recent antibiotics. Follow collection instructions carefully and wait for the result. If chlamydia is detected, take the full treatment as directed, avoid sex until advised, and ensure recent partners receive confidential notification and assessment. Screening does not test for every STI automatically; ask which infections are included and whether additional tests are appropriate.

Arrange prompt care for pelvic or testicular pain, fever, pain during sex, unusual discharge, bleeding between periods or pain when passing urine. Severe lower abdominal pain, fainting, fever with worsening pain or a painful swollen testicle needs urgent assessment. Do not wait for a screening result if symptoms are severe.

Ask which body sites should be tested, whether recent exposure affects timing and which other STI tests you need. Clarify how results are delivered, when treatment is required, how partners are notified and whether repeat testing is recommended after treatment.
