How effective is stem cell transplant for leukaemia?

A transplant uses healthy blood-forming stem cells after treatment that clears space in the bone marrow and suppresses existing marrow activity. The new cells can restore blood production. With a donor transplant, donor immune cells may also recognise and attack remaining leukaemia cells. That immune effect can help control disease, while also causing graft-versus-host disease and other immune problems. The balance depends on the leukaemia subtype, remission status, donor match, age, organ function, infection history, and previous treatment.

A transplant team will review blood and marrow findings, organ tests, infections, medicines, fertility concerns, and available donors. Ask how the proposed conditioning treatment works, how long you may need close monitoring, and what support is needed at home. Plan for transport, medicines, infection precautions, nutrition, and follow-up. Do not stop treatment or supplements without checking with the team.

After transplant, contact the transplant team immediately for fever, chills, new rash, persistent diarrhoea, mouth sores that prevent drinking, breathing difficulty, bleeding, confusion, or a sudden reduction in urine. Infection and immune complications can worsen quickly when the immune system is suppressed.
