How effective is statin therapy for peripheral arterial disease?

Peripheral arterial disease involves reduced blood flow through arteries outside the heart, often affecting the legs. Cholesterol can contribute to plaque within artery walls. A statin helps reduce cholesterol in the bloodstream and supports protection of blood vessels throughout the body. It may not remove leg pain straight away, because walking symptoms can also reflect the amount of narrowing and the muscles’ blood supply. Treatment is usually one part of a wider vascular plan.

Take your statin as prescribed and attend reviews for cholesterol and vascular risk factors. Do not stop it without medical advice. If you smoke, ask for help to stop; supervised walking or exercise may also be recommended when suitable. Check feet and legs for new sores, colour change or coldness, especially if sensation is reduced. Report unexplained muscle pain or weakness, dark urine or yellowing skin. Other prescribed treatments, including blood pressure or antiplatelet medicines, may have separate purposes.

Seek urgent help for a suddenly cold, pale or blue leg, severe new leg pain, numbness, weakness or a wound that rapidly worsens. Emergency help is also needed for chest pressure, severe breathlessness or sudden stroke-like symptoms. Contact your clinician promptly about new or worsening walking pain or persistent statin-related symptoms.
