How effective is statin therapy for angina?

Angina commonly reflects reduced blood flow through the heart’s arteries. Statins lower LDL cholesterol and help slow the buildup and destabilisation of fatty deposits in artery walls. Their benefit is preventive and builds with continued treatment; they do not widen an artery immediately or stop pain during an episode.

Chest discomfort can still occur while cholesterol is well controlled. Other parts of care may include medicines for symptom relief, blood-pressure management, activity advice and assessment of the artery disease itself. Your clinician uses your medical history and blood tests to choose and monitor treatment.

Take the statin at the prescribed dose and tell your clinician if you miss doses, develop unexplained muscle pain or weakness, dark urine, severe tiredness or yellowing of the skin. Do not stop it suddenly without discussing the reason, because a replacement or dose adjustment may be possible.

Keep appointments for cholesterol and safety checks when advised. Continue the other parts of your angina plan, including carrying and using your prescribed short-acting medicine. Eating patterns, physical activity and avoiding tobacco can support the wider cardiovascular plan.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain that is severe, new, lasts longer than expected, occurs at rest, or comes with sweating, nausea, fainting or breathlessness. Do not wait for a statin to help; statins do not treat an acute angina episode. Seek prompt advice for suspected statin side effects.
