How effective is splinting for mallet finger?

Short answer
Splinting is often effective for mallet finger because it keeps the fingertip straight while the injured tendon heals, but consistent positioning and a proper assessment are essential.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why position matters
Mallet finger happens when the tendon that straightens the fingertip is injured, sometimes with a small bone injury. The fingertip may droop and may not actively straighten. A splint supports the end joint in extension, preventing the healing tendon from being repeatedly pulled apart.
The middle finger joint should usually remain free to bend unless your clinician gives different instructions. A splint does not make the tendon strong immediately; healing requires the fingertip to stay correctly positioned throughout the advised treatment period.
Making treatment work
Keep the fingertip supported as instructed, including during washing or changing the splint. If the fingertip bends while the splint is off, contact your clinician because the treatment plan may need adjustment. Check the skin for rubbing, moisture, or pressure, and keep the splint clean and dry.
Do not test the fingertip by repeatedly letting it droop. Move the other finger joints if permitted, but avoid gripping activities that force the injured finger. Read more about the treatment in the Splinting guide.
When to seek care
Seek assessment if the fingertip remains drooped, becomes more painful, or develops marked swelling, numbness, colour change, or a skin wound. Urgent review is appropriate after a deep cut, a visible deformity, or an injury involving a crushed fingertip or nail bed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the tendon or bone is involved, which joints the splint should cover, and how to wash without bending the fingertip. Clarify the wearing schedule, skin-care routine, exercise timing, and what to do if the finger bends accidentally.

Questions people ask
Can I remove a mallet finger splint to wash?
Only if your clinician has shown you how to keep the fingertip straight throughout the change. Accidental bending can disrupt the healing position.
Why is my fingertip still drooping?
Drooping can persist while the tendon heals, or the splint may not be holding the joint correctly. Arrange a review rather than changing the fit yourself.
