How effective is splinting for AC joint injury?

Short answer
Splinting can reduce shoulder movement and discomfort after an AC joint injury, but it does not repair every ligament injury or replace an examination.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main purpose
- Rest the shoulder and limit painful movement
- What it cannot do
- Repair or realign every AC joint injury
- Follow-up
- Reassessment guides movement and rehabilitation
What splinting can do
The acromioclavicular joint sits where the collarbone meets the highest part of the shoulder blade. After a sprain or separation, a sling or supportive device can rest the arm close to the body and limit movements that pull on sore tissues. This may make everyday activity more comfortable while the injury settles.
Its usefulness depends on the degree of separation, pain, shoulder function, and whether there is a fracture or another injury. A splint supports comfort; it does not realign a displaced joint or determine whether surgery is needed.
Using support safely
Use the device fitted or recommended by a clinician, and keep the shoulder supported during activities that increase pain. Follow instructions about removing it for hygiene, gentle movement, or sleep. Avoid lifting, pushing, and overhead reaching until you have clear guidance. The elbow, wrist, and fingers can often be moved gently if this does not increase pain, helping prevent stiffness.
Arrange follow-up so shoulder movement and the prominence over the joint can be reassessed. A physiotherapist may then guide gradual range-of-motion and strengthening work.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or weak, or if pain suddenly becomes severe. Prompt review is also needed after a new fall, visible skin pressure from the device, increasing swelling, or inability to move the arm. These changes can indicate a more serious injury or a support that needs adjustment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which type of support fits the injury, how long to use it, which movements are safe, and when to begin physiotherapy. Ask how the injury was graded and what changes would suggest that imaging or a different treatment is needed.

Questions people ask
Can splinting heal an AC joint injury by itself?
It can support comfort and protection, but healing also depends on the injury pattern and a planned return to movement.
Should I keep the shoulder completely still?
Use support as directed, but ask when gentle movement of the shoulder and arm should start because prolonged stillness can cause stiffness.
