How removal works

A clinician may snip, freeze or use heat to remove a confirmed skin tag. The choice depends on size, shape, stalk and position. The spot may be tender, crusted or temporarily lighter or darker while healing, and a small scar is possible.

Removal treats the existing tag rather than the tendency to develop others. Do not cut or burn a growth at home: bleeding, infection and incorrect diagnosis are possible.

Before and after removal

Have a changing, painful, bleeding or unusually pigmented growth examined before cosmetic removal. Tell the clinician about diabetes, immune problems and medicines affecting bleeding or healing. Keep the area clean, avoid picking the crust and protect healed skin from strong sun.

When to seek care

Seek assessment if a supposed tag grows quickly, changes colour, becomes firm, bleeds without rubbing or develops an uneven surface. After removal, contact the clinic for worsening redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever or bleeding despite pressure.
