How effective is skin cancer screening for actinic keratosis?

Actinic keratosis is a rough, scaly area caused by long-term ultraviolet exposure. During screening, a clinician looks over the skin and may use magnification or another examination method to assess texture, colour, borders, and change. Several lesions can look similar, so a visual check may identify concern without naming the final diagnosis. If a spot is unusual, thick, tender, bleeding, or not healing, the clinician may recommend sampling it. Laboratory examination of a sample is what can distinguish actinic keratosis from certain skin cancers.

Before an appointment, note when each rough spot appeared, whether it has changed, and any symptoms such as tenderness, bleeding, or crusting.
