How effective is sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast cancer?

The sentinel nodes are the first lymph nodes that usually receive drainage from a breast tumour. During the procedure, a surgeon identifies and removes a small number of these nodes for laboratory examination. If they contain no cancer cells, a larger lymph-node operation may not be needed in situations where this procedure is appropriate. If cancer cells are found, the result helps the team assess the extent of disease and consider surgery, radiation, medicines, or additional tests. The result is one part of treatment planning, alongside tumour features and imaging.

Before surgery, ask how the nodes will be located, whether dye or a tracer is used, and how the result could affect the next step. Tell the team about allergies, medicines that affect bleeding, and previous operations. Afterward, follow wound-care and movement instructions. Temporary soreness, bruising, or altered sensation near the breast or armpit can occur. Report concerns rather than changing dressings or medicines on your own.

Contact the surgical team urgently for fever, increasing redness or swelling, pus, uncontrolled bleeding, worsening pain, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath. New swelling of the arm or hand also deserves assessment, especially if it persists or progresses.
