How effective is sclerotherapy for varicose veins?

A clinician injects a solution into a targeted vein, causing it to close so blood is redirected through healthier vessels. It is often considered for smaller or surface veins; larger veins or significant underlying reflux may need another approach. The treated vein may fade gradually rather than immediately, and several visits can be needed when there are multiple veins. Sclerotherapy treats selected veins, not a tendency to form new varicose veins.

Have the vein examined and ask whether ultrasound is needed to assess circulation before treatment. Discuss medicines, pregnancy, prior clots, allergies, and skin problems. After injection, follow instructions about walking, compression, bathing, and review. Contact the treating service if pain or swelling is increasing instead of settling, or if the skin around the injection changes significantly.

Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided leg swelling, severe calf pain, chest pain, coughing blood, or new shortness of breath. These symptoms need assessment rather than assuming they are a normal treatment effect. Promptly report a cold, pale, numb, or severely painful foot, or spreading redness with fever.
