How effective is sclerotherapy for stasis dermatitis?

Stasis dermatitis develops when blood flow from the lower leg is not returning efficiently, causing fluid and pressure around the skin. This can lead to itch, redness, scaling, thickening, or darkening. Sclerotherapy closes selected abnormal veins so blood can use other routes. It may be considered after an assessment identifies veins that are suitable to treat.

The procedure does not directly remove eczema, heal an open ulcer, or correct every cause of venous disease. Compression when suitable, leg elevation, movement, moisturising, and prescribed anti-inflammatory care may remain part of the plan. Treating the wrong vessel or treating active infection can worsen skin problems, so timing and examination matter.

Have the leg examined for swelling, wounds, infection, and circulation before an injection plan is chosen. Tell the clinician about previous clots, medicines, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding, reduced mobility, and any skin product or steroid use. Keep irritated skin protected and avoid scratching. Follow specific instructions about compression, walking, bathing, and wound care rather than changing them because the visible veins look better.

Arrange prompt medical review for a rapidly spreading red or hot area, increasing pain, fever, a new wound, blackened skin, or bleeding from a leg vein. Urgent care is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or new marked one-sided leg swelling. These signs can indicate a problem needing assessment beyond routine dermatitis care.
