A burn scar may be wide, contracted, uneven, tethered or raised. Revision surgery removes or rearranges selected scar tissue so the line sits in a less tense direction, or releases tight tissue that restricts movement. A graft, flap or tissue-expansion approach may be considered when closing the area would create too much tension. The operation does not erase the injury; it replaces one scar pattern with a more planned healing line.

Results are influenced by the scar's depth, size, site, flexibility, skin tone and whether growth or movement continues to pull on it. Several forms of treatment may be combined, and the scar can continue maturing after the wound closes.

See a surgeon experienced with burn reconstruction for an examination of scar thickness, mobility, colour and function. Bring details of previous operations and treatments, and mention medicines, smoking, medical conditions and any tendency to form raised scars. Follow wound-care, dressing and activity instructions carefully after surgery. Protect healing skin from sun and attend planned reviews. Do not massage, stretch or apply products until the surgeon says the wound is ready.

Contact the surgical team for increasing pain, spreading redness, wound separation, persistent bleeding, pus, fever or a sudden loss of movement. Urgent assessment is needed for severe swelling, breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening illness. A scar that becomes increasingly raised, itchy or tight also deserves review because additional treatment may be needed.
