How effective is radiotherapy for thymoma?

Radiotherapy uses carefully planned high-energy beams to damage thymoma cells in a defined area. It may be considered after surgery when microscopic cells could remain, when surgery cannot remove all visible disease, or when the tumour needs local control. Some people receive it alongside other treatments; others may not need it if the tumour was fully removed and its features suggest a lower risk of return. The treatment plan also considers nearby organs, including the heart and lungs, because the thymus sits in the chest.

Ask the oncology team whether the aim is to reduce recurrence risk, treat remaining disease, relieve symptoms, or combine these goals. Bring the pathology report and operative details if available. A radiation oncologist can explain the target, planning scans, number and timing of sessions, expected skin or chest symptoms, and how breathing and heart protection will be handled. Do not stop prescribed medicines without checking, especially if you have an autoimmune condition associated with thymoma.

Contact the treatment team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, trouble swallowing, fever, or a cough that is worsening. During treatment, report severe fatigue, difficulty eating or drinking, or skin changes that become painful or blistered. Sudden severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or chest pressure needs urgent emergency care.
