How effective is radiotherapy for squamous cell skin cancer?

Radiation damages squamous cancer cells within a planned skin area and a small surrounding margin. It may be considered when an operation could affect the eye, nose, ear, lip, or another important structure; when cancer remains at the edge after surgery; or when the cancer returns in the same region. It can also reduce symptoms from a larger or uncomfortable lesion. The result depends on depth, size, location, nerve involvement, previous treatment, and whether disease is limited to the treated area. A skin lesion that changes is not automatically cancer, so diagnosis needs examination and tissue testing.

Your team may use photographs, examination, and scans to map the target and protect nearby healthy tissue. Tell them about previous radiation, skin conditions, medicines, and any difficulty with wound healing. The treated skin can become red, dry, tender, or moist as visits continue, and hair in the area may thin. Follow the prescribed skin-care plan, avoid rubbing or unapproved creams, and protect the area from sun exposure. Keep review appointments so the response and healing can be checked.

Call your treatment team for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, fever, uncontrolled pain, heavy bleeding, or a wound that is not healing. Seek urgent help for swelling that affects breathing or vision, sudden facial weakness, or severe bleeding. After treatment, report a new lump, persistent ulcer, crusting, numbness, or pain in the treated area rather than assuming it is only irritation.

Ask why radiation is being considered instead of or alongside surgery, how the eye, ear, nose, or nerves will be protected, how skin care will work, when healing should be reviewed, and what change would suggest that more assessment is needed.
