How effective is radiotherapy for prostate cancer?

Radiotherapy directs energy at the prostate and, when needed, nearby tissues or lymph nodes. It may be given from outside the body or delivered through an implanted treatment approach. The choice depends on the tumour's grade, PSA pattern, stage, prostate size, urinary symptoms and previous procedures. Some people also receive hormone treatment to make cancer cells more sensitive to radiation.

Effectiveness is assessed over time using PSA tests, examination and scans when needed. PSA can fall gradually, and a temporary fluctuation does not by itself show treatment failure. Possible effects include urinary changes, bowel irritation, tiredness and sexual difficulties; the likelihood and duration vary with the technique and personal health.

Ask whether the aim is cure, long-term control, or relief of symptoms. Review the proposed technique, preparation, visit pattern, hormone treatment and follow-up schedule. Tell the team about urinary obstruction, bowel disease, previous pelvic surgery and medicines that affect bleeding, because these details can change planning and support.

Contact the treatment team for inability to pass urine, persistent rectal bleeding, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, fever, or worsening weakness. Emergency care is needed for heavy bleeding, fainting, confusion or sudden severe illness. A change in PSA should be discussed at the planned review rather than interpreted alone.
