How effective is radiotherapy for oesophageal cancer?

Radiotherapy directs radiation at the oesophageal tumour and sometimes nearby lymph nodes. It may be given with chemotherapy before surgery, as part of treatment when surgery is not planned, or to ease difficulty swallowing, pain or bleeding. The plan depends on where the tumour lies, whether it has spread, how well you are eating and drinking, and the response expected from other treatments. A scan or endoscopic assessment may be needed to judge response; symptom changes alone cannot answer that question.

Tell the team about swallowing difficulty, weight change, reflux, medicines and dental or chest problems. Ask whether a dietitian, swallowing specialist or feeding support should be involved before treatment. Take small, suitable meals as advised, maintain fluids and follow mouth and skin-care instructions. Report worsening swallowing, pain or coughing during meals quickly, because support can help prevent dehydration and poor nutrition.

Seek urgent help for inability to swallow liquids, choking, severe chest pain, vomiting blood, black stools, breathing difficulty or signs of dehydration such as fainting or very little urine. Fever or rapidly worsening pain during treatment also warrants prompt clinical advice.

Is radiotherapy being used before surgery, with chemotherapy, or to relieve a symptom? What area will be treated? How will eating and drinking be supported? Which swallowing or chest symptoms need same-day advice? How will response be checked?
