How effective is radiotherapy for mouth cancer?

Radiotherapy may be recommended as the main local treatment, after surgery, or alongside medicine treatment. The target can include the mouth tumour, the surgical bed, and selected neck lymph-node regions when the team considers them at risk. The purpose may be to remove remaining cancer cells in the field, control a tumour that cannot be removed safely, or ease pain, bleeding, or difficulty swallowing.

Planning takes account of the tongue, jaw, teeth, salivary glands, throat, and spinal cord. Common treatment effects can include mouth soreness, dry mouth, taste changes, tiredness, and swallowing difficulty. Your team assesses response and healing through examination and follow-up tests; symptoms alone cannot show the full result.

Arrange dental review if your oncology team recommends it, and mention loose teeth, dentures, mouth ulcers, or existing dental problems. Use the mouth-care routine provided, choose foods and drinks that are easier to swallow, avoid tobacco and alcohol, and ask early about dietitian, speech and swallowing, or pain support. Do not apply products to the treatment area unless approved.

Tell your team about worsening mouth pain, inability to drink, repeated choking, bleeding, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling. Seek urgent care if swelling makes breathing difficult, bleeding does not settle, or you cannot keep fluids down. Prompt support can protect hydration, nutrition, and the airway while treatment effects are managed.

Ask which mouth and neck areas will be treated, how dental care fits around radiation, how swallowing and saliva may be supported, whether medicines are planned with radiation, and how response will be followed.
