How effective is radiotherapy for Merkel cell carcinoma?

Merkel cell carcinoma is a skin cancer that may spread to nearby lymph nodes. Radiation can be directed at the original tumour site, the surrounding area, or regional nodes. It may follow surgery to treat microscopic cells that cannot be seen, or be used when surgery is not suitable. In more advanced disease, other treatments may also be needed because radiation treats the planned field rather than the whole body.

The radiation oncologist maps the skin lesion, scar, and relevant lymphatic region while protecting healthy skin and deeper structures. Effectiveness is reviewed through wound or skin changes, examination of the treated area, and imaging or other tests selected for your situation. A temporary increase in redness or irritation can occur during healing and does not by itself show whether treatment has worked.

Tell the team about prior surgery, medicines that affect healing, and any skin condition in the treatment field. Wash gently, avoid rubbing or unapproved creams, protect the area from sun, and follow dressing instructions. Keep follow-up visits so the skin, scar, and lymph-node areas can be examined for healing and new changes.

Contact your team if the treated skin becomes increasingly painful, opens, drains, or develops spreading redness, or if you have fever. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, facial swelling that affects breathing, or sudden severe illness. New lumps or persistent changes near the treated area should be reported promptly for examination.

Ask whether radiation is planned before or after surgery, which skin and lymph-node areas will be included, how healing will be supported, whether another treatment is needed, and how recurrence will be monitored.
