How effective is radiotherapy for lymphoma?

Lymphoma includes different diseases, and many are treated mainly with medicines. Radiation may be directed at a limited group of lymph nodes, a bulky area, or a site causing pressure, pain, or another problem. It may be given after drug treatment to consolidate control, or as a focused treatment when lymphoma is concentrated in one region.

Planning balances the target against nearby organs such as the heart, lungs, bowel, thyroid, or spinal cord. The team chooses the field and dose according to the lymphoma subtype, previous treatment, body region, and purpose of care. Response is judged through symptoms, examination, blood tests, and scans when appropriate; a scan result must be interpreted in context.

At planning, share your previous chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, and any implanted medical device. Ask how to protect the skin in the treated area and whether fatigue, nausea, bowel changes, or throat discomfort could occur. Keep a record of symptoms and medicines, drink and eat as advised, and attend follow-up even when the treated area feels better.

Call your treatment team for fever, chills, worsening pain, new swelling, repeated vomiting, or trouble eating and drinking. Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, sudden weakness, or rapidly worsening swelling of the face or neck. The appropriate response depends on the body area treated and your wider lymphoma care.

Ask which lymphoma subtype and sites are being targeted, whether radiation follows medicine treatment, what outcome the team is seeking, how response will be checked, and which late effects matter for the planned body region.
