How effective is radiotherapy for Hodgkin lymphoma?

Hodgkin lymphoma is a disease of the lymphatic system, so treatment decisions consider all known areas rather than one lump alone. Radiotherapy may be directed at a site that remains active after drug treatment, a bulky area, or a region where local control is especially important. For some people it is combined with systemic treatment; for others, observation or a different treatment approach may be more suitable after review of scans.

The response is assessed with examination and imaging. A treated lymph node can remain enlarged because of scar tissue or inflammation, so size alone does not always show whether active lymphoma remains. The team considers the scan pattern, symptoms, blood results, and timing.

Ask how radiotherapy fits with your chemotherapy or other medicines, and which body areas are included. Tell the team about previous radiotherapy, pregnancy or fertility concerns, implanted devices, and any new pain, swelling, fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight change. Keep scheduled visits and report fatigue, skin irritation, cough, or discomfort in the treated area. Take medicines exactly as prescribed and avoid stopping treatment without discussing it.

Contact your treatment team urgently for fever, chills, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, rapidly increasing swelling, severe weakness, or inability to drink. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or confusion. These symptoms can reflect infection, pressure, inflammation, or another problem requiring immediate assessment.
