How effective is radiotherapy for head and neck cancer?

Radiotherapy may be used to treat the main tumour, nearby lymph nodes, or both. It can be the main treatment for some cancers, follow surgery to treat cells that may remain, or combine with medicines when a stronger local and whole-body approach is needed. The treatment area is mapped carefully to protect structures such as the eyes, salivary glands, jaw, spinal cord, and swallowing muscles as far as possible.

Effectiveness is not one fixed outcome. The exact site, tumour size, lymph-node involvement, spread to other areas, cell features, general health, and whether treatment can be delivered as planned all matter. Changes in swelling, saliva, taste, swallowing, skin, or voice may occur during treatment and can affect eating and communication.

Before treatment, ask for a dental review when the mouth or jaw is in the field, and discuss nutrition, speech, and swallowing support. Tell the team about loose teeth, mouth ulcers, pain, hearing problems, weight change, or difficulty swallowing. Follow skin and mouth-care instructions, take prescribed pain relief as directed, and use the nutrition plan offered. Do not wait until eating becomes very difficult before asking for help.

Call promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, are choking or coughing with drinks, have uncontrolled pain, bleeding, sudden breathing difficulty, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and severe dizziness. A fever or rapidly worsening mouth or throat swelling also needs urgent advice. Breathing difficulty is an emergency.
