How effective is radiotherapy for eye melanoma?

Eye melanoma, also called ocular or uveal melanoma, may be treated with a focused form of radiotherapy such as a plaque placed beside the tumour or a precisely aimed beam. These approaches deliver radiation to the tumour while limiting exposure to other parts of the eye and face.

The main goals are to control the tumour and preserve the eye when that is medically suitable. Vision can still change if the tumour or radiation affects the retina, optic nerve, lens, or central vision area. The eye team also monitors eye pressure and the appearance of the treated site over time.

Ask the ocular oncology team which method fits the tumour’s location and what vision is realistically protectable. Attend eye examinations and scans as scheduled. Report new floaters, flashes, a shadow, worsening blur, eye pain, or redness; these symptoms can have several causes but need examination after treatment.

Contact the eye team promptly for sudden vision loss, a curtain-like shadow, severe eye pain, marked redness, or new neurological symptoms. Seek emergency help for sudden weakness, trouble speaking, or severe headache. Do not wait for a routine visit when a visual change is abrupt or rapidly worsening.
