How effective is radiofrequency ablation for lumbar spondylosis?

Short answer

Radiofrequency ablation may ease selected lumbar spondylosis pain, yet its benefit varies and it does not reverse spinal wear or treat every back symptom.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the treatment targets

Lumbar spondylosis describes age-related wear in the lower spine, including changes around discs and facet joints. A scan can show these changes without proving that they cause the pain. Radiofrequency ablation targets selected small nerves carrying pain from a suspected source, often facet joints, using controlled heat. It cannot remove a bone spur, widen a narrowed canal, or restore worn cartilage.

The most useful candidates are identified through a matching pain pattern, examination, and sometimes diagnostic nerve or joint injections. Relief may be partial, and local soreness or altered sensation can follow treatment. Once symptoms settle, a graded programme can improve trunk and hip strength, movement, and tolerance for walking or sitting.

Steps before treatment

Ask the clinician to connect your symptoms with the proposed target and explain what the diagnostic findings mean. Review medicines, preparation, post-procedure transport, and temporary lifting or driving restrictions. Set a functional goal, such as standing longer or returning to a chosen activity, and agree how it will be measured. Continue the recommended movement plan and report changes rather than increasing loads abruptly.

When urgent review is needed

Seek urgent care for new difficulty passing urine or stool, numbness around the inner thighs or groin, or worsening weakness in either leg. Contact the procedure team for fever, drainage, spreading redness, severe headache, or pain that becomes increasingly intense. Back pain after a significant fall or collision, especially with new weakness or loss of sensation, needs prompt assessment.

Questions to bring

Which part of my lumbar spine is thought to cause pain? Does my examination suggest nerve compression that needs another approach? What did any diagnostic block tell us? What daily activity should improve, and how will I rebuild it safely? Which warning signs should prompt immediate help?

Questions people ask

Can ablation remove lumbar spondylosis?

No. It may reduce pain signalling from a selected source, while the underlying spinal changes remain.

Does a scan alone show that ablation will work?

No. The scan must be interpreted with your symptoms, examination, and sometimes diagnostic testing.
