How effective is radioactive iodine therapy for thyroid cancer?

After thyroid surgery, radioactive iodine may destroy remaining thyroid tissue or iodine-absorbing cancer cells. It is mainly used for differentiated thyroid cancers; some cancers do not take up iodine and need other approaches.

The treatment is swallowed as a capsule or liquid. A low-iodine preparation plan and a period of raised thyroid-stimulating hormone may be advised. Temporary separation from others can be part of safety instructions because the body emits radiation while the iodine leaves it.

Confirm the cancer type, scan findings and reason for treatment with your endocrinology or oncology team. Ask how to prepare medicines, food and hydration, and how long to follow radiation-safety instructions at home.
