How effective is radical hysterectomy for uterine sarcoma?

Uterine sarcoma is a group of cancers arising from muscle or connective tissue in the womb. Different subtypes can behave differently, so the pathology report matters when choosing treatment.

Radical hysterectomy removes the womb, cervix and nearby tissues. Surgery can be useful when the tumour is confined enough to remove safely, but it may not remove disease elsewhere. Doctors may combine surgery with other treatments or recommend a different operation after imaging and specialist review.

Ask whether the diagnosis has been reviewed by a gynaecological cancer multidisciplinary team. Discuss the tumour subtype, grade, stage, scans, whether the ovaries and nearby lymph nodes need assessment, and how surgery would change future fertility and hormone function.

Request a clear plan for recovery, follow-up imaging, symptom control and any additional treatment. A second pathology opinion can be useful when the subtype is uncertain.

Seek prompt review for new or persistent abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pressure, increasing pain, or a rapidly enlarging abdomen. During treatment, contact the team urgently for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, faintness, breathlessness, or a swollen painful leg.
