How effective is radical hysterectomy for endometrial hyperplasia?

Endometrial hyperplasia is an overgrowth of the womb lining. A biopsy helps distinguish changes without atypia from atypical changes, which can carry a higher chance of progressing to cancer. Treatment may involve hormone therapy, removal of the womb lining, or hysterectomy, depending on the result and personal circumstances.

A radical hysterectomy removes the womb and cervix with nearby tissues; it is more extensive than a simple hysterectomy. It may be discussed when cancer is suspected or confirmed, rather than for uncomplicated hyperplasia alone. The operation also ends the ability to carry a pregnancy.

Ask the gynaecology team to explain the biopsy wording, whether atypical cells are present, and why a radical operation is being proposed instead of a less extensive option. Imaging and examination may clarify whether the cervix or surrounding tissues are involved.

Before deciding, discuss fertility, menopausal effects, the possible need to remove ovaries, recovery, and whether a gynaecological cancer specialist should review the plan. Bring your pathology report and a list of medicines to the appointment.
