How effective is pulsed dye laser treatment for infantile haemangioma?

An infantile haemangioma is a group of extra blood vessels in the skin. Pulsed dye laser targets blood within shallow vessels, so it is more useful for a flat, red or lingering superficial component than for a bulky deep mass.

Treatment may be considered after the lesion has been assessed for growth, location and possible effects on sight, breathing, feeding or function. Laser does not replace treatment that is needed to protect an important body area, and it may not address loose skin or deeper tissue left behind.

Arrange review with a paediatric dermatologist or another clinician experienced in vascular birthmarks. Bring photographs showing how the mark has changed and mention any ulceration, bleeding, rapid enlargement or trouble involving an eye, nose or mouth.

Ask how the skin will be protected during treatment, what redness or bruising may look like afterward, and how follow-up will judge progress. Sun protection after each session helps reduce unwanted colour change while the skin settles.

Seek prompt medical advice if the haemangioma bleeds persistently, becomes ulcerated, looks infected, swells quickly, or interferes with vision, breathing, feeding or movement. These concerns need assessment independently of whether laser is planned.
