Protons release most of their radiation dose near a planned depth and can reduce dose beyond the tumour compared with some photon plans. It does not make treatment free of side effects, and it is not appropriate for every tumour or treatment plan. The team compares proton and photon plans, considering how well each covers the tumour and protects normal tissue. Effectiveness also depends on tumour biology and whether other treatments are needed.

Ask the paediatric oncology and radiation teams to explain the treatment aim, expected number of visits, anaesthesia or sedation needs, and how the child will be positioned. Discuss short-term effects such as tiredness, skin changes, nausea, or appetite changes, as well as effects that may appear later. Bring details of previous chemotherapy, surgery, medicines, allergies, and implanted devices. Call the treatment team for repeated vomiting, poor drinking, fever, worsening pain, unusual sleepiness, new weakness, or skin reactions that are becoming more severe.
