How effective is prescription antiperspirant for intertrigo?

Intertrigo develops where warmth, friction, and trapped moisture irritate opposing skin surfaces. Reducing sweat can make the fold drier and may lower friction, helping the skin recover when moisture is a major trigger. A rash can still persist if yeast, bacteria, eczema, or another condition is involved.

Antiperspirant is different from an antifungal, antibacterial, barrier product, or anti-inflammatory medicine. Using the wrong product on a raw fold may increase burning, so the rash should be assessed when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Use only the prescribed product and apply it to clean, fully dry, intact skin if your clinician approves it for that fold. Pat rather than rub, wear breathable clothing, change damp garments, and separate skin surfaces with a clean, soft layer when advised. Avoid fragranced products and do not apply antiperspirant over cracks, oozing areas, or open sores.

Arrange an assessment for spreading redness, warmth, increasing tenderness, pus, a strong new odor, fever, or a rash that does not improve with moisture control. Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening pain, marked swelling, or feeling very unwell. Treatment may need to target an infection or another cause rather than sweat alone.

Ask whether the rash is suitable for antiperspirant, whether a barrier or antimicrobial treatment is needed, and how to protect the fold while it heals.
