How effective is follow-up after cancer treatment for oral submucous fibrosis?

A review may assess mouth opening, stiffness, pain, burning, chewing, swallowing, speech, and the appearance of the lining of the mouth. The clinician may feel areas of firmness and look for ulcers, red or white patches, bleeding, or a persistent lump. Follow-up can show whether fibrosis is stable, whether exercises or other care are helping, and whether a new area needs closer examination. It is not a substitute for reporting changes between visits.

Attend oral examinations and use prescribed jaw-opening exercises or other treatment as directed. Avoid areca nut products, tobacco, and irritants that your clinician has advised you to stop. Tell the team if eating becomes harder, your mouth opens less, or a sore does not heal. Bring questions about nutrition, dental care, pain relief, and ways to maintain comfortable mouth movement.

Arrange prompt medical or dental assessment for an ulcer, lump, red or white patch, bleeding area, or change in the mouth that persists or grows. Seek urgent help if swelling makes breathing difficult, swallowing suddenly becomes unsafe, or bleeding does not settle. A mouth change can have different causes, so examination is needed rather than guessing from appearance.
