How effective is follow-up after cancer treatment for Barrett's oesophagus?

Follow-up may include upper endoscopy, close inspection of the oesophageal lining and biopsies from areas that look changed. The laboratory examines these samples for intestinal-type lining, dysplasia or cancer cells. The findings help determine whether treated tissue has healed, whether abnormal cells remain and whether another procedure is needed.

The timing and type of review depend on the original findings, treatment used, biopsy results and your general health. Acid reflux symptoms can improve or persist independently of the lining appearance, so symptom control and endoscopic surveillance answer different questions.

Keep the endoscopy and pathology appointments, and follow instructions about fasting and medicines. Tell the team about swallowing difficulty, food sticking, reflux that is becoming harder to control, chest discomfort or unintentional weight change. Take prescribed reflux treatment as directed unless your clinician changes it.

Ask how the treated area will be documented and when results will be discussed. If biopsies are taken, confirm who will contact you and what the next step will be for each possible result.

Seek urgent medical advice for food or liquids becoming stuck, vomiting blood, black stools, severe chest pain, repeated vomiting, fainting or new breathing difficulty. These symptoms can signal bleeding, obstruction or another urgent problem and should not wait for planned surveillance.

Ask what the biopsies showed, whether the visible abnormal tissue was fully treated, when the next endoscopy is due, and which symptoms need an earlier review. Clarify how reflux treatment supports healing and who will explain the pathology report.
