How effective is photodynamic therapy for actinic cheilitis?

Actinic cheilitis is sun damage affecting the lip, often causing persistent roughness, dryness, scaling, or colour change. Photodynamic therapy uses a light-sensitive preparation and a specific light source to damage abnormal cells. The treated lip may become red, swollen, crusted, or tender before it settles.

It is most useful when a clinician has confirmed the diagnosis and judged that the abnormal cells are suitable for light-based treatment. A deeper focus, a thickened area, or concern about invasive cancer may require a different procedure or a tissue sample. Clearing visible change does not remove the need for review because sun-damaged lip skin can develop new areas.

Arrange an examination before treatment, especially if one area is ulcerated, bleeding, firm, or rapidly changing. Ask how the lip should be protected from light after the preparation is applied, how to manage swelling and crusting, and whether a repeat session may be considered.

Follow wound-care instructions, avoid picking crusts, and protect the lips from sunlight with the recommended barrier. Keep every follow-up appointment so persistent or returning roughness can be assessed rather than assumed to be treatment failure or simple dryness.

Contact the treating clinician if pain, swelling, blistering, or drainage is worsening instead of settling, or if you develop fever or spreading redness. Seek prompt assessment for a lip sore that does not heal, repeated bleeding, a growing lump, or a firm area, because these features need examination for a deeper process.
