How effective is PET-CT scan for lymphoma?

The scan combines functional imaging with CT detail. It can show active areas in lymph nodes and organs, reveal disease outside the expected region and support staging. A comparison with earlier images can help the team judge whether treatment has reduced activity, although scar tissue or inflammation may affect interpretation.

Different lymphoma subtypes behave differently, and not every lymphoma takes up the tracer in the same way. PET-CT is therefore one part of assessment, alongside biopsy, blood tests, examination and symptoms. A scan finding alone does not determine the diagnosis or the next treatment.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about eating, drinking, medicines and activity before the appointment. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and report any difficulty lying still. Ask whether an earlier scan should be brought for comparison.

When the report is available, ask whether the pattern matches your known lymphoma subtype and what has changed from the previous scan. The team may use the result with examination and laboratory findings to decide whether to continue, adjust or complete treatment, or whether another test is needed.

Seek urgent medical advice for breathlessness, chest pressure, new confusion, fainting, severe pain, persistent vomiting, or a fever during treatment. Do not wait for a scheduled scan review when symptoms are rapidly worsening; the cause may need assessment independently of the imaging result.

Ask what the scan says about disease location and activity, how reliable the comparison is, and whether inflammation could explain a finding. Ask what result would change your plan and when you will discuss it.
