How effective is pelvic ultrasound for imperforate hymen?

An imperforate hymen is a membrane that covers the vaginal opening. Menstrual blood can collect behind it, sometimes causing pelvic pain, a feeling of pressure, or difficulty passing urine. Ultrasound can help show fluid in the vagina or uterus and whether the uterus and ovaries have an expected appearance. This is particularly helpful when symptoms or an examination do not give a complete picture.

The scan supports, rather than replaces, a clinical assessment. Depending on age, comfort, and the anatomy being assessed, the clinician may recommend an external scan over the lower abdomen or another approach. The choice should be explained beforehand, and discomfort should be reported during the procedure.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecology clinician if imperforate hymen is suspected. Ask whether you need a full bladder for an abdominal scan and what the result could mean for the next step. Treatment, when needed, is a minor procedure to create an opening so retained blood can drain; ultrasound does not correct the membrane itself.
