Short answer

Pelvic floor physiotherapy can lessen pelvic organ prolapse symptoms and improve support and function, especially when exercises are matched to the prolapse and practised consistently.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What treatment can change

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when pelvic tissues provide less support to an organ, which may cause pressure, a vaginal bulge, bladder changes or difficulty emptying the bowel. Physiotherapy cannot reposition every prolapse, but it can help you coordinate pelvic floor support during lifting, coughing and other pressure-raising activities.

A pelvic health physiotherapist may teach graded contractions, full relaxation, breathing, posture and bowel habits. Treatment can also address constipation, movement patterns and fear of activity. Success is best judged by comfort, daily function and symptom control, not by exercises alone or by the appearance of a bulge.

Using physiotherapy safely

Arrange an assessment to identify the prolapse symptoms and check whether you can contract and release the muscles correctly. Practise in the position recommended for you, then gradually apply the skill to standing, coughing or lifting. Avoid straining and breath-holding; keeping stools soft and using sensible lifting technique can reduce pressure on the pelvic floor.

Record pressure, bulging, urinary changes and bowel emptying across ordinary activities. A clinician may discuss a pessary, continence care or another treatment alongside physiotherapy if symptoms remain troublesome.

When to seek medical care

Book medical review for a new or enlarging bulge, difficulty passing urine or stool, bleeding, unusual discharge or persistent pelvic pain. Seek urgent care if you cannot empty your bladder, have severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever or tissue that is very swollen, dark or injured. New symptoms should not be attributed to prolapse without assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Which organ or tissues are affected by my prolapse? Can physiotherapy address my symptoms and what should I avoid while starting? Would a pessary or another option complement exercise? How should I manage constipation or bladder emptying? What changes require prompt review?
