How effective is PARP inhibitor therapy for ovarian cancer?

PARP inhibitors block proteins that help cells repair certain types of DNA damage. Ovarian cancer cells with particular repair weaknesses may be less able to recover when PARP is blocked. Doctors may use these medicines after a response to chemotherapy to help maintain control, or in another setting based on the cancer’s features and prior treatment.

Effectiveness is not the same for every person. Testing may include inherited and tumour-based genetic or molecular assessment. A result can help the team judge whether a PARP inhibitor is reasonable; it cannot promise a response. The oncologist also considers kidney function, blood counts, other medicines and whether the cancer has already received a similar drug.

Take the medicine on the schedule prescribed and do not change the dose without speaking with your oncology team. Blood tests are commonly used to monitor red cells, white cells, platelets and organ function. Tell the team about fatigue, nausea, appetite changes or new medicines. Keep a record of doses and symptoms so treatment adjustments can be based on a clear pattern.

Contact your cancer team promptly for fever, chills, unusual bruising or bleeding, marked breathlessness, chest pain, severe weakness or vomiting that prevents fluids. These symptoms may reflect low blood counts, infection or another problem that needs assessment. Do not wait for the next routine appointment if symptoms are sudden or severe.

Ask whether inherited and tumour testing has been completed, what benefit is realistic in your treatment setting, how long treatment is planned, and how scans will assess control. Ask which blood-test changes matter, how side effects will be managed, and whether any current medicines or supplements should be avoided.
