How effective is palliative radiotherapy for cancer pain?

The radiation team plans treatment around the painful tumour or area affected by cancer. Radiation can reduce activity in that area and may lessen inflammation, pressure or irritation of nearby tissues. The purpose is symptom control, so treatment is tailored to the pain’s location, cause, previous treatment and your general health. Relief may take time to develop, and some people have a short-lived increase in pain soon after treatment.
