How effective is osteotomy for hip dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia means the socket does not fully support the ball of the hip. An osteotomy repositions part of the pelvis or thigh bone to improve how the joint surfaces meet. Better coverage may reduce concentrated pressure and support movement, but it cannot remove established cartilage loss.

Suitability is considered from symptoms, examination and imaging. The surgeon may assess socket shape, joint congruence, cartilage condition, stiffness and signs of arthritis. A result is more difficult to predict when the joint already has substantial damage or movement is markedly limited.

Discuss the purpose of the proposed correction: pain relief, protection of the joint, improved mechanics, or a combination. After surgery, contact the team for fever, wound drainage, increasing redness, sudden calf swelling, chest pain, breathlessness or rapidly worsening hip pain. Before treatment, new inability to bear weight, a fall or a sudden change in hip function warrants prompt assessment.
