How effective is oral rehydration therapy for heat cramps?

Short answer
Oral rehydration therapy may help heat cramps by replacing fluid and electrolytes lost through sweating, especially when the person is alert and able to drink.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it may work
Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms that can occur during or after exertion in hot conditions. Sweating removes water and salt, and replacing both may support normal muscle function. An oral rehydration solution provides a measured combination of fluid and electrolytes.
Drinking alone is not the whole response. Stop exertion, move to a cooler place, loosen extra clothing and rest the affected muscles. An oral solution cannot safely manage heatstroke or severe dehydration, which need emergency care.
What to do
Stop activity and cool down before drinking. Take a prepared oral rehydration solution in small, regular sips and follow the packet dilution exactly. Gentle stretching may ease a cramp, but do not return to strenuous activity while symptoms continue.
Avoid salt tablets or highly concentrated drinks unless a clinician has specifically advised them. If cramps recur, discuss work, exercise, medicines, and fluid intake with a healthcare professional.
When it is an emergency
Call emergency services for confusion, collapse, seizure, loss of consciousness, very hot skin, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or inability to drink. Seek medical advice when cramps last despite rest and cooling, keep returning, or occur with persistent vomiting or very little urine.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the cramps fit heat illness, which rehydration drink is suitable, how to plan fluids during exertion, whether a medicine or health condition increases risk, and when activity can safely restart.
