How effective is oral corticosteroid treatment for hives?

Hives are raised, itchy welts caused by temporary release of inflammatory chemicals in the skin. A corticosteroid can suppress inflammation, so swelling and itch may ease during a flare. The effect may not last if the trigger continues, and repeated courses can bring risks such as mood or sleep changes, blood sugar and blood pressure changes, and increased infection risk.

Many people are managed with a non-sedating antihistamine chosen and adjusted by a clinician. Persistent or recurrent hives need assessment for patterns, medicines, infections, physical triggers, and other explanations rather than repeated self-treatment with steroids.
