How effective is antihistamine treatment for insect bites?

Oral antihistamines can reduce itching and swelling from many insect-bite reactions, but they do not remove the bite, prevent infection or treat severe allergy. They are most useful for histamine-driven itch and raised bumps. The choice depends on your age, health conditions, other medicines and whether drowsiness would create a safety problem.

A bite may remain visible after the itch improves, and some reactions last several days. New bites, scratching and rubbing can keep the area irritated. Papular urticaria can cause repeated itchy bumps after insect exposure, especially when more than one area is affected. Antihistamines may reduce the urge to scratch, but they do not replace cleaning the skin or checking for infection.

Arrange prompt review for increasing warmth, pain, pus, fever, red streaking, swelling near an eye or a reaction that is not settling.
