How effective is antihistamine treatment for drug rash?

Oral antihistamines may ease itching from a mild drug rash, but they do not treat the medication reaction itself or make serious features safe to ignore. A drug eruption can vary from a limited itchy rash to a severe reaction involving skin or internal organs. Contact the prescriber promptly so the suspected medicine can be assessed safely; do not stop an essential medicine without advice unless emergency services tell you to.

Antihistamines can reduce histamine-related itch and some hive-like swelling. They may offer comfort while the cause is being reviewed, but a rash can continue or worsen despite less itching. The appearance, timing, medicine list and other symptoms guide the assessment. A product that causes drowsiness can also mask how unwell you feel or make daily activities unsafe.
