Oral antihistamines often lessen the itching and raised lines of skin writing, but the response differs and friction can still trigger marks. Dermatographism, also called skin writing, occurs when light scratching or pressure produces a temporary raised line. Antihistamines reduce the histamine response behind itching and swelling; they do not stop every mechanical trigger.

You may notice less itch, shorter-lasting welts or fewer bothersome marks during clothing friction, towelling or scratching. Symptoms can be more noticeable after heat, dry skin or repeated rubbing. Some medicines cause drowsiness, so a product that seems helpful for the skin may still be unsuitable before driving, studying or operating equipment.
