How effective is oral antifungal treatment for nail fungus?

Nail fungus, also called onychomycosis, can thicken, discolour, crumble, or separate a nail from its bed. Oral medicine reaches the nail as it grows, so symptoms do not disappear as soon as the infection is controlled. A clinician may confirm fungus because trauma, psoriasis, and other nail disorders can look similar.

Toenails generally grow more slowly than fingernails. A damaged or discoloured portion may therefore remain visible while a clearer nail emerges behind it. Shoes, moisture, and coexisting athlete’s foot can contribute to recurrence.

Take the prescribed medicine on the schedule provided and tell the prescriber about liver disease, regular medicines, supplements, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Some tablets need a review of interactions or blood tests. Do not use leftover treatment or stop early because the nail still looks abnormal.

Keep nails trimmed and dry, do not share clippers, and disinfect or replace items that touch the affected nail as advised. Footwear that traps sweat can keep the nail environment damp. Ask whether nearby athlete’s foot also needs treatment.
