How effective is oral antifungal treatment for jock itch?

Jock itch affects the groin and nearby upper thighs. Tablets work through the bloodstream, which can be useful when the rash covers a broad area or topical medicine has been difficult to use consistently. A clinician may first check that the rash is fungal because eczema, irritation, psoriasis, and some infections can look similar.

Improvement in itch may come before the skin looks normal. Redness, scaling, or darker colour can take longer to settle. Moisture, friction, tight clothing, and untreated athlete’s foot can encourage recurrence.

Arrange an assessment if the rash keeps returning, spreads, or fails to respond to a correctly used cream. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and do not share tablets. Keep the groin dry, change damp clothing promptly, choose breathable underwear, and avoid steroid cream unless a clinician has advised it.
