How effective is oral antifungal treatment for athlete's foot?

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that can cause scaling, cracking, itching or soreness between the toes and on the soles. Many cases can be treated with a medicine applied to the skin. Oral treatment may be considered when the infection covers a broad area, keeps returning, involves thick nails or has not responded to suitable topical treatment.

The diagnosis should be checked because eczema, dermatitis and other conditions can mimic fungus. Oral antifungals travel through the body, so the choice depends on your medical history, liver health and other medicines.

Take or use the antifungal exactly as directed and complete the recommended course unless the prescriber changes it. Keep feet dry, wash and dry carefully between the toes, change socks regularly and let shoes air. Do not share towels, socks or footwear, and wash items that contact the affected skin.

Avoid scratching cracked skin and ask whether close contacts or infected nails need assessment. Tell the clinician about liver disease, pregnancy, allergies and all medicines before an oral course begins.
